About Tomb of Khai Dinh

Nestled on the Chau Chu mountain, just 10 kilometers from the heart of Hue, the Tomb of Khai Dinh offers a captivating journey into the past. Commissioned by Emperor Khai Dinh himself, this imperial mausoleum breaks away from the traditional norms seen in previous Nguyen Dynasty tombs, embracing a bold fusion of art and architecture. The tomb's construction spanned over a decade, from 1920 to 1931, and was marked by its use of modern materials such as concrete and iron, alongside traditional stone. As you ascend the 127 steps leading to the tomb, you'll be greeted by imposing stone statues of warriors and horses, standing sentinel amidst the lush green landscape. The mausoleum's exterior is a testament to the emperor's eclectic taste, featuring ornate details and European-inspired elements. Inside, the walls and ceiling are adorned with stunning frescoes and mosaics crafted from glass and porcelain, reflecting both Eastern myths and Western aesthetics. The centerpiece, Khai Thanh Palace, houses the emperor's altar and a magnificent bronze statue of Khai Dinh, which is the focal point of the tomb's interior. Visitors can also explore the surrounding gardens and terraces, offering panoramic views of the verdant hills and valleys. A visit to the Tomb of Khai Dinh is not just a step back in time, but an exploration of a cultural crossroads that captures the essence of an era where old and new coalesce. Nearby, you can also explore other royal tombs and the historical sites of Hue, making your visit a rich tapestry of Vietnam's imperial past.
