About Valley of the Fallen
The Valley of the Fallen, known as 'Valle de los Caídos' in Spanish, is a monumental complex located approximately 45 kilometers northwest of Madrid. Commissioned by Francisco Franco in 1940 and completed in 1958, it stands as a solemn memorial dedicated to those who lost their lives during the Spanish Civil War. Designed to be a place of reconciliation, this iconic site is both a historical and architectural marvel. Visitors are greeted by the immense basilica, carved into the granite mountainside, which is among the largest in the world and features a dome adorned with stunning mosaics. The basilica houses a grand altar and an impressive pipe organ, creating an atmosphere of solemn reverence. Above it all, the monumental cross, soaring 150 meters into the sky, is visible from miles away, symbolizing peace and remembrance. The surrounding pine forests and the peaceful valley provide a tranquil setting for contemplation and reflection. Today, the Valley of the Fallen also serves as a poignant reminder of Spain’s journey towards democracy and unity.
