Yu Garden
A tranquil Ming Dynasty garden in Shanghai's heart.

About Yu Garden
Yu Garden, or 'Yuyuan' as it is known in Mandarin, is an emblem of classical Chinese landscaping, located in the vibrant city of Shanghai. Established in 1559 during the Ming Dynasty by Pan Yunduan, a government officer, the garden was initially created as a private sanctuary for his aging parents. Today, it spans an impressive five acres, offering a serene escape from the urban hustle and bustle. As you wander through the garden, you'll encounter a tapestry of traditional elements—majestic rockeries, enchanting pavilions, and peaceful koi ponds, each artfully designed to evoke harmony and balance. The Great Rockery, standing at over 14 meters, is a masterpiece of its own, constructed from thousands of tons of rock. The exquisite Jade Rock, with its perforations, is another highlight, believed to have mystical properties. The garden's architecture reflects the sophisticated aesthetics of the Ming and Qing dynasties, with dragon-shaped walls and ornate carvings adorning the space. Yu Garden is conveniently situated near the bustling Yuyuan Bazaar, making it an ideal starting point for exploring Shanghai's Old City. Visitors can also enjoy local delicacies and shop for traditional crafts in the surrounding area. A visit to Yu Garden is not just a journey through a historic landscape but a cultural immersion that captures the soul of ancient China.
