Discover Brasília's iconic modernist cathedral.

About Cathedral of Brasília
The Cathedral of Brasília, officially named the Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of Aparecida, is a stunning example of modernist architecture, located in the heart of Brazil's capital. Inaugurated in 1970, this architectural marvel was designed by Oscar Niemeyer, a key figure in the creation of Brasília, and represents an integral part of the city's UNESCO World Heritage status. The cathedral's design is distinctive and innovative, featuring a crown-like structure comprised of 16 curved concrete columns. These columns soar upwards, converging in a graceful, symbolic gesture toward the heavens. The structure is surrounded by a circular reflecting pool that enhances its ethereal quality, especially when illuminated at night. Inside, visitors are welcomed by a serene and luminous space, amplified by the brilliant stained glass panels that bathe the interior in a kaleidoscope of colors. These panels, designed by Marianne Peretti, depict abstract forms in vibrant hues, creating a celestial atmosphere. The cathedral houses a majestic altar and a series of bronze sculptures representing the Four Evangelists, adding to the spiritual ambiance. Visitors can also admire the three angelic sculptures suspended from the ceiling, each adding to the tranquility and sense of divine presence within the cathedral. Just outside, the bell tower and the statue of the Four Evangelists greet visitors, setting the tone for the spiritual journey inside. Located near the National Congress and other significant buildings in the Monumental Axis, the Cathedral of Brasília is not only a spiritual haven but also a cultural and historical landmark. Whether you're exploring the modernist wonders of Brasília or seeking a moment of reflection, the cathedral offers a profound and captivating experience.
